Introduction to Dorset Buttons

40.00

Dorset buttons were first made in the county of Dorset during the 17th century. It was a cottage industry and button makers were paid per button, but the industry died out in 1851 when machines were introduced to manufacture buttons. The tradition has been revived by organisations such as the WI and is now a popular craft. Buttons can be used as brooches, as embellishments, and of course as custom-made buttons to personalise a hand-made garment.

During the workshop you will learn the theory of Dorset button making and make a posy button. All materials will be provided, along with refreshments (tea, coffee, homemade cake).
